Free closing reception and hands-on workshop: The art of Persian painting and Islamic geometric design in relation to calligraphy. By Maryam Vesal, local artist and maestro of Persian Miniature and Tazheeb. Space and supplies for the workshop is limited to 30 participants on a first come first served bases. Registeration will begin 1 hour before the exhibition at ICCNC's gallery on 2nd floor. The workshop will be finished by 4 p.m. and there will be a short closing reception with socializing till 5 p.m.

Workshop Description: At this workshop, Maryam Vesal will give an illustrated presentation on different Persian painting styles, specially Tazheeb and Islamic geometric patterns. She will talk about the origins of Tazheeb (when and where and why it was created), its elements (discussing geometry, repetition, symmetry, and colors), and its relation to Persian calligraphy. Then she will move to describe the techniques of designing and painting tazheeb elements and guide the participants to create a Tazheeb piece step by step. Maryam Vesal is an Iranian artist working and living in San Jose. She has learned Persian Miniature and Tazheeb under masters in Iran such as Lotfi and has been practicing and creating traditional artworks for over 10 years. She has a BSC degree in Applied Mathematics from Shahid Beheshti University and a BFA in Studio Art from University of Texas at Austin. Maryam is a multi-disciplinary artist working in variety of media such as: ceramics, painting, photography, performance, and installation sculpture. She has exhibited in several international exhibitions and was Assistant Curator of the Freedom and Enlightenment exhibition (2014) and Interfaith Art Exhibition Third International Biennial (2015) in Oakland.
