Calligraphies in Conversation Call to Artists
We invite all calligraphers and artists to submit artworks to our upcoming Calligraphies in Conversation exhibition to be held on November 7- December 12, 2015 in multiple locations across San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA including Oakland Main Public Library, Oakland Asian Cultural Center (OACC), Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California (ICCNC), and Online Exhibition at the Website of Ziya Art Center.
Calligraphers and artists in all levels with any style, script, and language may submit up to 4 pieces and participate. We accept artwork in two main categories:
1- Classic/ traditional Calligraphy: The design and execution of lettering with pen, brush, or a broad tip instrument or brush in one stroke as opposed to build up lettering, in which the letters are drawn. In this section, works on paper is preferred, canvas is accepted but not recommended.
2- Related Disciplines: The art of giving form to signs and letters in an expressive, harmonious and skillful manner with any medium including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, glass, textile art, typography, digital art, and mixed media.

“Calligraphies in Conversation” encompasses an annual group exhibition and a series of public venues including calligraphy demonstrations, workshops, masterclasses, and calligraphers’ talks and presentations focusing on endorsing the appreciation of traditional calligraphy in hands-on and tangible manner. The emphasis of this program is initiating a meaningful conversation between different calligraphy traditions especially between the Middle Eastern/ Islamic calligraphy and other calligraphy scripts, traditions, and languages.
