Interns are needed in two positions: Curator Assistant and Project Assistant

Overview: Ziya Art Center is a nonprofit 5O1(c) organization. Ziya’s mission is to promote the study, understanding, and preservation of the Middle East and Persian arts in United States by providing art exhibitions, workshops, classes, and cultural events.
Description of the projects
Both interns will support the execution of two of our art and culture programs: 1- Visual Arts of Neekon Festival; 2- Iranian Arts Now exhibition
NeekOn is a unique festival that will take place on September 26, 2015, at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse, and the De Young Museum’s Koret Auditorium. This year’s theme is Giving and includes artists from Iran, Middle East, and Silk Road region.
“Iranian Arts Now”: In the Fall of every year Ziya Art Center curates an international themed exhibition to represent artists to the international community of art lovers and to discover how contemporary Iranian artists living in different places around the world would express the theme through their work. The theme of 2015 exhibition is “Giving and Benevolence” and we are going to showcase the digital representation of the selected artworks at the Neekon Festival as well as showcasing them online from September 26 – December 29, 2015 on the website of Ziya Art Center.
Responsibilities of Curator Assistant
• Leading communications with artists and other constituents via email, phone calls, and meetings.
• Actively assisting in searching eligible artists, making a database of their information, and inviting them to participate in the exhibitions.
• Actively posting the “Call to Artists” and related material to proper platforms including art websites, artists’ facebook pages and groups, and related organizations.
• Assisting in judging the artworks and art proposals of both programs.
• Assisting in preparations of educational posters and flyers related to the programs.
• Assisting in setting up and control of the digital representation of “Iranian Arts Now” at Neekon festival on the day of the event.
• Effectively report to Executive Director each step of the process and communicate any conflicts.
• Other related project areas as assigned
Responsibilities of Project Assistant
• Assisting in drafting and sending effective letters and emails to communicate with artists and other constituents in different parts of the project.
• Managing the artworks submissions and arranging the art submissions to be prepared for judging, selection, and uploading.
• Assisting actively in social media and community outreach to make sure different aspects of the projects will get good attention.
• Being present the whole day of the Neekon festival on September 26, 2015 on the site and leading different aspects including guiding artists and visitors, giving artists needed helps, helps in set ups and clean ups, hospitality, etc.
• Effectively report to Executive Director each step of the process and communicate any conflicts.
• Other related project areas as assigned.
Remuneration, Benefits
Both positions are non-paid and part-time. Interns will be reimbursed for any actual, reasonable expenses, incurred in the course of her duties, which have been authorized in advance by Executive Director. Interns can benefit from recommendations or support letters from Ziya upon request.
Hours, Duration, and Location
The positions will start from mid-July and will continue till late September. The hours are flexible and interns will work remotely and virtually on the assigned project. Time commitments are vary and might be from 2-8 hour per week depending on the workload. Project Assistant interns need to be able to be present the whole day of the Neekon festival on September 26, 2015 at the Golden Gate Park, SF.
Qualifications
For Project Assistance, any educational background is acceptable. Art education for Curator Assistant is a must. Students (college and university) and recent graduates are eligible to apply.
Being on board with the mission of Ziya and Neekon. Having a passion for and being interested in the arts from Iran, Middle East, and Silk Road region. Having a background in a Middle Eastern language or familiarity of Iranian culture is a big plus.
Good written and verbal communication skills; ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment, problem-solve, manage multiple tasks, and respond quickly to requests.
