Rite of Passage

International Exhibition

Theme: Environmental Art, Art & Nature, Nature in Cultures and Cultural Celebrations such as the Persian New Year Called Nowruz

Place and Date: The San Francisco City Hall, through Iranican’s Nowruz Celebration Venue on March 25, 2016

We are honored to announce the accepted artists of the “Rite of Passage” exhibition. We received over 350 art submissions from over 130 artists living worldwide including United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Iran, Japan, Ukraine, France, Germany, Hong Kong, and Czech Republic. Narrowing down the selection and curating works for the exhibition was a difficult task. The overall quality of submissions was high and because we have a limited space in showcasing the works at the San Francisco City Hall, we decided to exhibit part of the works only digitally on our online gallery.

We wish all the artists who are not accepted well in finding alternative support for exhibiting their works and hope that they will consider submitting works again to our future exhibitions. As a matter of policy, we do not provide applicants with written or verbal feedback on their applications.

“Rite of Passage” is the title of the visual arts section of  Iranican's Nowruz Venue at the San Francisco City Hall on March 25, 2016. Coinciding with spring and Nowruz, this exhibition demonstrates the rooted attitude of respect and honor in Iranian culture regarding nature and stewardship of the natural environment through the community at large.

The focus is on the unique cultural, spiritual and creative interpretations of the artists who have been working directly in their natural environment or have implemented nature in their art through their creative expression. As their personal investigations also express the self in relation to this environment, we hope to expand and create a new conversation between environmental art and personal spirituality.

The exhibition consists of digital art, new media art, video art, an installation by Saba Ghamati, and a durational performance by Angela Newsham, Charlie Watts, Hannah Beck, Nathalie Brilliant, and Maria Dawn in which their bodies are utilized in a sculptural way through relating, engaging, and holding dynamic positions with the things found from nature, and each other.

“Rite of Passage” is an extension of an inaugural exhibition with the same title held at the Gallery of ICCNC in Oakland from February 20 to March 20, 2016. The extended exhibition at the San Francisco City Hall is co-curated and juried by Arash Shirinbab and Minoosh Zomorodinia of Ziya Art Center out of hundreds of art submissions worldwide, with the aid of assistant curators, Faezeh Faezipour and Shaghayegh Shirinbab.
